The team played only one season in the American first tier, taking part to the United Soccer Association in 1967. The league merged with the National Professional Soccer League one year later to form the NASL. Meanwhile, the Boston Beacons were also founded earlier in the year, but the new American league decided that cities shouldn't be represented by more than one team. Therefore, the Shamrock Rovers folded, and the Beacons became their successors in the newly formed NASL. Unfortunately, the Boston Beacons were also short lived as the team folded within less than a year. It took six years for the city of Boston to have a new team when the Boston Minutemen were founded in 1974. The team played three seasons in the NASL before folding in 1976. Two years later, the team got their successor as the New England Tea Men were founded in 1978, playing in Schaefer Stadium and Nickerson Field, which were previously owned by the Minutemen. The New England Tea Men folded in 1980 after playing three seasons in the NASL. In 1980, the team relocated to Florida to become the Jacksonville Tea Men. This new team played the 1981 and 1982 seasons of the NASL and folded in 1984. A decade later, the New England Revolution were founded. Their name is a callback to the New England Tea Men. The home stadium was also the same as the Tea Men: Foxboro Stadium (previously called Schaefer Stadium). The club changed home field in the 2000s, moving to the Gillette Stadium. |
