INFO:Colorado Rapids were founded in 1995 and have been playing in the MLS since the beginning of the competition in 1996. They're not direct successors to a team, but several former clubs can be considered spiritual predecessors.
The history of professional football in Colorado dates back to 1974 when the Denver Dynamos were founded. However, the team played only two NASL seasons before moving to Minnesota to become the Minnesota Kicks, which consequentially are their direct successors.
In 1978, a new Colorado based team was founded: the Caribous of Colorado. This team, though, suffered the same fate as the Denver Dynamos. In fact, they were purchased and moved to Atlanta after only one season in the NASL. One year later, the Atlanta Chiefs were reformed after having folded in 1973 under the name Atlanta Apollos.
In 1985, a third team was founded in the city with the name Colorado Comets. This team folded in 2003. During their existence, they only played in non-league competitions, including indoor.
The
Colorado Foxes are the closest team to being proper predecessors of Colorado Rapids. The Foxes were founded in 1990 and spent seven seasons in the American Professional Soccer League (A-League since 1995). Although the American soccer federation rates the league as a second division, the APSL was the
de facto top tier division in the United States prior to the foundation of the MLS in 1996 with Colorado Rapids being one of its founders. As the Rapids were now the main team in the city, the Foxes relocated to San Diego in December 1997 to become the San Diego Flesh.
