A utility player who wasn't the best technical footballer, but tenacious enough to earn his spot. He played both in midfield, on BOTH wings and at fullback for United - in fact he would claim that left back is his best position! Grimes was a player who would tackle aggresively, press, overlap but also deliver good crosses and try out long shots due to his strong shot (albeit pretty inaccurate ones). Regular penalty taker as well.

Manchester United invited Dubliner Ashley over for a trial in 1972 but rejected him only to pay Bohemians £20,000 for him five years later! His applicability and—most importantly—his perseverance had been noticed by Tommy Docherty's scouts. Ashley Grimes excelled as a fitness phenomenon, someone who seemingly could run to the end of the world at no cost to him.

Although never a regular at Old Trafford he did manage nearly 100 League appearances in six years before moving to Coventry in 1983 and then transferring to Luton a year later in a swap deal involving Kirk Stephens. At Kenilworth Road, Ashley added to his Eire international caps and put on many cultured displays at left back or left midfield. Totally left footed, Ashley provided the awkward cross from the right that enabled Brian Stein to score the winner in the 1988 Littlewoods Cup final. After a spell in Spain, Ashley saw out his career with Stoke before joining old colleague Lou Macari at several clubs as coach.

He won 18 caps for the Republic of Ireland and scored one goal, a long-range strike against Spain in a Euro 84 qualifier at Lansdowne Road in November 1982.
