Horst Buhtz said about him: "With his calmness and experience, Manni is priceless for us." Manfred Müller was a goalkeeper with great reaction, who often liked going out fast to clear out the ball or confront the attacker. He was not always successful but did have a fine read of the game from the back. However, he didn't possess exceptional positioning & goal coverage and he wasn't too confident nor secure at catching the high balls and coming out for crosses, often re-thinking his actions before the actual cross. Also, his reach wasn't the best as he would concede goals from long shots. Müller came from Schwarz-Weiss Essen to Wuppertaler SV, then to 1. FC Nürnberg and played temporarily for ESV Ingolstadt after a dispute with Nuremberg. In 1979 he came to FC Bayern at the age of almost 33 and was to be used as a substitute goalkeeper. Since goalkeeper Walter Junghans showed some uncertainties at the beginning of the season, Müller got his chance and took it. He played for Bayern between 1979 and 1984 and played 65 games. He won the German championship title twice (1980, 1981) and the DFB Cup (1982, 1984), while also reaching the European Cup final in 1982, being the starting keeper. However, Müller eventually had to take a back seat due to the signing of the Belgian world-class goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff in 1982. Spoiler: show | |
