Essentially found on both wings and in the center of the attack, he was a mobile and opportunistic forward with great response (especially noted were his headers), very agile, fast and efficient. He had to move a lot in the attacking line to be more efficient (basically omnipresent), wasn't a type of player who would just wait for the ball in one place, but Wagner also had a great sense of spacing, which helped him score many goals in the 16m. He didn't have the highest jump but had a great feel from crosses. He wasn't afraid of duel game, had very solid legs. Not too technical, his dribbles were quick and simple, liked to use the shoulder shimmy move to pass an opponent. Originally from Drusenheim, Roland Wagner started with his hometown club before joining Racing. He played his first D1 match on February 25, 1973 at the age of 17, replacing Reinhard Libuda who was then his idol. With Joël Tanter and Albert Gemmrich, he formed the Strasbourg attacking trident, champion of France in 1979. In October 1979, he was called up for the first time to the France team for a friendly match against the United States, where he scored the second goal of the three-nil victory. During this encounter, he seriously injured his Achilles tendon. This injury and its after-effects will severely handicap him for the rest of his career. After a white season, he returned to the field in 1981, at Racing and Mulhouse, freshly promoted to Division. Injuries pursued him, however, and he decided to end his pro career in 1983 at the age of 28. Back in Drusenheim, it was his former teammate at Racing Jean-François Jodar who convinced him, during his jubilee, to try the adventure again in Montceau in D2. He stayed there for two seasons before playing successively for Haguenau in the DH and Linx in the Verbandsliga. Roland Wagner played 157 Division 1 games and scored 35 goals in nine years at this level. He won the division 2 French championship with RC Strasbourg in 1977 then the French championship in 1979. In the amateur ranks, he won the honorary division Alsace championship in 1990 with FCSR Haguenau and the Verbandsliga Südbaden in 1993 with SV Linx. He has a selection for a goal scored in the French football team as well as a selection in the France B team. Spoiler: show |
