INFO:Tackler, Celso was a player with a rough game. A lot of short passes in the centre of the midfield, but also occasionally long ones to the side. Possesses very good technique, but slow in his actions and reactions.
Born in Brazil, he arrived in Portugal in the summer of 1969 to join Boavista FC, staying with the checkered emblem until the end of the 1971/72 season. In 1972/73 he transferred to Futebol Clube do Porto. The debut for the Dragons took place on September 11, 1972 at Estádio das Antas in the first game of the 1972/73 National Championship, in the reception to Sporting CP and where the leonine club took the two points of victory. In that 1972/73 season, he was one of the players in the squad who played the most games, with 25 for the National Championship, 3 for the Portuguese Cup and 5 for the European Champion Clubs' Cup, when the white and blues arrived for the first time in history at 3rd round of a European competition. In the following season it was only used in 7 matches and all counting for the National Championship. at the end of that time he left Antas. In 1974/75 he returned to the Bessa club where he played two more seasons. Celso was thus part of one of the best teams at Boavista FC and where he won the Portuguese Cup in those two seasons in which he returned to Bessa. In 1976/77 Celso returned to FC Porto, largely because of José Maria Pedroto who also returned to Antas, along with his technical team, to guide the Dragons. Right at that time, Celso helped the white and blues win the Portuguese Cup, nine years after their last victory in the competition. In the following season, the long-awaited title of National Champion arrives, which nineteen years ago escaped from FC Porto. At the end of the 1977/78 season, Celso left Porto. In the four seasons in which he played for the Dragons, he played 87 official games and scored 1 goal in the 23rd round of the 1972/73 Championship when FC Porto drew 1-1 against V. Guimarães. In 1978/79 Celso returned to Boavista FC, in the following season he returned to Brazil and went to play in Goias EC where he ended his football career.
Celso Matos also wore the shirt of the National Team as he was nationalized Portuguese, made three games for Portugal with his debut taking place in 1976 at Estádio das Antas where Portugal lost 2-0 to Poland. Then he played against Denmark and in a friendly against France, in Paris.
