INFO:He is most widely known due to his heroics against England in Wembley, a match in which he not only had his finger broken in the third minute of play by Allan Clarke but started a torrid affair with Lady luck that lasted through the night. But the Tomaszewski that starred in goal during the 1974 World Cup was a far more assured player, who had improved, if not in overall ability, then in self-belief. Becoming the first keeper to save two penalties in a World Cup. Best keeper of the tournament, Pelé even named him the best goalkeeper in the world.
Started out in Śląsk Wrocław he made his debut in the first league in 1968. Then he became a player of Legia Warszawa, replacing Władysław Grotyński in the main line-up. In the 1970/1971 season, he won the Polish vice - championship with the club. Due to poor performances at the beginning of the 1971/1972 season, he lost his place in the basic squad to Piotr Mowlik, then he took 3rd place with the club in the league and reached the Polish Cup final. After the 1971/1972 season and playing 19 league matches, he signed a contract with ŁKS Łódź, in which, thanks to his excellent performances, he managed to win the position of one of the best Polish goalkeepers and return to the Polish national team. On September 29, 1973, in a 2-0 away game against Odra Opole, he scored his only goal in the league, defeating Andrzej Krupa in the 79th minute from a penalty kick and thus determining the result of the match. He stayed at the club until 1977/1978 season, later playing in Beerschot, with which he won the Belgian Cup in the 1978/1979 season, after which in 1981–1982 he represented Hérculesa Alicante, in which he played only 12 league matches. In 1982 he returned to ŁKS Łódź, playing his last professional match on August 25, 1982
Accumulated 59 caps for Poland, the most of any Polish goalkeeper, keeping 24 clean sheets. Holds the Polish team record of 411 minutes in which he did not concede a goal. Claimed silver in 1976 Olympics. Tomaszewski is best remembered by some for his performance for the Poland national team against England, in a qualifying match for the 1974 World Cup, which England needed to win. Tomaszewski had been labelled "a clown" by Brian Clough before the match (the two men however became quite friendly in later years), but had the last laugh as he turned in a man-of-the-match performance repeatedly denying England's attackers; the only goal he conceded being an equalizing penalty from Allan Clarke. Poland drew the game 1–1 and qualified for the finals in West Germany at the expense of England.
