INFO:
Verheyen made his debut in 1961 at the age of 17 as a midfielder in the first team of Beerschot VAC. He soon acquired a basic place in the team and continued to play there until 1971. With Beerschot he reached the final of the Belgian Cup in 1968 , but lost the match against Club Brugge after taking penalties. It was Verheyen who missed the decisive penalty. In 1971 Verheyen won the Cup final against Sint-Truiden with Beerschot 2-1.

In 1971 Verheyen switched to RSC Anderlecht . With the team, Verheyen won the national championship in 1972 and 1974 and the Belgian Cup in 1972, 1973 and 1975. Verheyen is the only Belgian player to have won the Cup three consecutive times (1971, 1972 and 1973). He played a total of 380 matches in the first division at Beerschot and Anderlecht, scoring 51 goals.

In 1975 Verheyen started playing football at the third division club Union Sint-Gillis, where he remained a member until 1978. He ended his career playing football in the fourth division at Hoogstraten VV.

With Belgium national team, Verheyen played 33 games without scoring any goals. At the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, he was in the Belgian squad, but was not used during the tournament. Two years later he played at the European Championships in 1972 on his own country both final round games in the semifinals against West Germany and in the match for third place against Hungary. In fact, he had scored a very important goal in the last minutes of the match in Rotterdam against the Netherlands on November 18, 1973, but the Soviet referee Kazakov canceled it for a non-existent offside. It was the last game of Group 3 qualifying for the 1974 World Championship, and the two teams were paired at the top of the standings. The match ended 0-0 and the Dutch qualified for the best goal difference, which would prove to be the big revelation of the tournament by finishing second behind the hosts of West Germany.
