Attack-MindedINFO:Legendary player of R.C.D. Espanyol with exquisite technique and excellent left-footedness, who executed a sober game, restful but with danger and with a lot of genius. The loss of speed he made up for to intelligently establish himself as the director of the team, very successful in taking free-kicks and especially penalties. He is the third player, after Raúl Tamudo and Antoni Argilés – and the first not born in Catalonia – who has played the most games (344) in the history of Espanyol, in which he scored 53 goals.
As an Español player, he is described as a winger who over the years has lost speed, but José María knew how to make up for the lack of speed necessary to be a born winger, with an unusual intelligence to move in a more backward area, becoming Espanyol's strategist, playmaker and also hammer. Intelligent, elegant, infallible from set pieces, the crowd is still shocked by the memory of his free kicks. He had the power for leadership and temperament. In his early years in Oviedo, he also played occasionally as a right winger.
He defended Espanyol for 11 seasons and no one doubts for those who have seen him play, that he has been one of the most legendary players in the history of Espanyol.
"A lover of attacking football, the Uruguayan coach Santamaria is committed to pure wingers. With the passage of time, José María has left the wing to occupy the 10 lane and take the team's handle in midfield. Undoubtedly, the 1972/73 season was one of the most brilliant for the Blue and Whites, Santamaría's team was very close to winning the League, never before or since was it so close for the Barcelona entity. Espanyol that season incorporated a defensive bulwark such as Pedro De Felipe from Real Madrid and De Diego from Sevilla. To all this, adding José María who, according to all the experts, had his best season as a professional, being the true soul of the team, the speed of Poli and the exponential growth of men like Granero, Ochoa, Solsona, Amiano or Roberto Martínez who was uncovered as one of the top scorers of the championship."
While playing for Real Oviedo, he made his debut with the Spanish national team "B" in November 1964, at the Campo del Arcángel in Córdoba, against Portugal B with a final result of 3-0 to which he contributed with two goals scored from the penalty spot. His debut with the senior national team took place on December 7, 1966 and the rival is the Republic of Ireland in the preliminary phase of Euro 1968. Spain ended up winning 2-0 and José María's first appearance could not have been more fortunate, as in the 22nd minute he scored the goal that opened the way to victory. This was followed by five more matches: twice vs Turkey in 1967, vs England in 1967, twice vs Czechoslovakia in 1967.
