Defence-MindedINFO:Ranieri was a grim and rocky full-back, not very fast but gifted with great tactical intelligence & capable of commanding the defense. Not a phenomenon but a useful element, a player that all coaches would like to have. Initially a goalkeeper and striker, Ranieri moved to Roma thanks to Herrera and became a full-back. He made a move to South in Catanzaro where the tall, thin, very self-confident player was doted by coach Di Marzio and immediately lines Claudio as a starter in the role of right-back or left-back. Between 1974 and 1982, he became the captain of Catanzaro and the player with the most appearances in Serie A (a total of 253 appearances and 10 goals, of which 128 with 4 goals in Serie A).
After interludes with Catania and Palermo (where he even played as a Libero), in 1986 he hung up his boots and embarked on a career as a coach.
