The Royal Antwerp Football Club had been founded in 1880 by British merchants who, not only exported their products and commodities to the world, but in doing so, introduced their most popular football code. A very conservative sporting club; the ‘Great Old,’ as Antwerp was affectionately known throughout Belgium, had reversed tradition by acquiring two foreign players for the 1966 season. Antwerp looked again into new areas. One had a large (30 ha) and open terrain on the eye in Deurne, near the pleasure garden Bosschuil. There was disagreement within the club. A group within the administration, including President Henri Elebaers and Alfred Verdyck, took a majority vote for their plan just to buy that was necessary for the development of new infrastructure. 8 acres And other lenders, however had to buy the whole site and would use the remaining space for other profitable projects. However, this was contrary to the rules of the Football Association, which has no commercial activity allowed. The Tawny Owl Stadium was inaugurated on November 1, 1923 with a match between Belgium and England, which attracted 40,000 spectators. Despite this great new stadium Antwerp experienced any problems. City Rival Beerschot was the better club in Antwerp and grabbed some land titles in the twenties. Also on extra-sporting continued conflicts persist in the club. The investors and owners wanted to be professional, based on the English model. Professionalism was not yet approved at the time by the Football Association, and the board chose therefore to remain an amateur. The owners of the official name and the Tawny Owl Stadium still refused entry to the stadium. With a young team, and named L'Antwerp, played one 1928/29 as the season. The home games were finished in the neighboring areas of Beerschot AC and Berchem Sport. Yet did in 1929 to catch up. Antwerp with this team his first national title in With Beerschot Antwerp was finished in first place. A test event in the field of Racing Mechelen had to decide on the title; Antwerp won 2-0. The Parties within the club reconciled again, and they started playing again as Royal Antwerp FC in their own Bosuil Stadium. Antwerp in 1930 could almost extend his title, but stranded as second on a tip of RCS Brugeois champion. The following year, in 1930/31, however, it was hit again, and took his second national title in Antwerp. The following year they again stranded in second just one point, this time champion and compatriot Lier Serbian province SK. There was disagreement between the players and the board. The following season the team failed to tie in with the strong performance of the previous season, and was a modal average performer. After a 7-1 loss at Standard Liège Club, several pro-Molnar players of intentionally playing poorly charged and suspended by the board. They left the club, and founded Boys Antwerp, where other former and active Antwerp Players go pulled. The new club joined the Flemish Association, an association with the Belgian FA competitive. That team would be champion several times. The first years of the Second World War played no competition, or provincial championships were played with an irregular national finals. From 1941, the normal leagues resumed. Antwerp was one of the better clubs, and succeeded so address. In 1943/44 in his third national title The following season was not played by the fighting during the Liberation. The first season after the war (1945/46) could not renew Antwerp Although his title, finished second after the RFC Malinois. By the 50s Antwerp became a middle position again. In 1955 the club however address. Succeeded again in a price Antwerp won on his 75th anniversary of his first Cup Belgium, after a 4-0 victory against Waterschei SV Thor. In the next league season 1955/56 they also knew another second place. Antwerp fought again participated in the summit. In 1957 Antwerp took his fourth league title, with six points ahead of the at that time very successful RSC Anderlecht. The following year, Antwerp knew almost to extend his title. Antwerp ended with as many points as Standard Club Liegeois. At equal points but it was at that time the team with the least defeats which was first. Standard had lost only four games, five Antwerp. So grab Antwerp in 1958 just next to the title. Antwerp played that year or the first European. They met in the European Cup European club Real Madrid. After a 1-2 defeat at home in front of 55,000 spectators, Antwerp also went 6-0 in Madrid with slicing.
In 1970/71 with happiness could avoid a degradation Antwerp. In the course of the season was the later champion Standard 0-2 will win. At Antwerp Standard four foreigners, however, had drawn up a more than welcome. Following a complaint received Antwerp awarded a 5-0 victory with the corresponding two points. It turned out at the end of the season Antwerp with only one point ahead to ended on the penultimate, Charleroi SC. Those two points proved as to have had in maintaining the team in the highest division a big contributor. Antwerp could eventually slow climb back. In 1973/74 shirt sponsorship was introduced in Belgium. Bell Telephone became the first sponsor who appeared on the shirt of Antwerp. That year they reached the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup. Moreover, they shut off the season in second place, less than two points of champions Anderlecht. Also in 1975, the second one, albeit large backlog of RWDM. In the Cup Antwerp reached the final that year, after including the elimination of same RWDM. Eventually it was that Anderlecht 1-0 winning the Cup took. Antwerp was the coming seasons usually play in the middle. In 1987 they even ended just above the relegation zone. The following year, however, under coach Georg Kessler, put Antwerp unexpectedly strong performance. Antwerp was unbeaten autumn champion. After the winter, however, it was slightly less, and eventually one stranded with KV Mechelen on just two points champion of Club Brugge. Antwerp was the season then not continue on this momentum: it was European and was eliminated early in the competition just get a European ticket at the end of the season. That next European season in the UEFA Cup 1989/90 put the team down a memorable performance against the Bulgarian Vitosha Sofia. Antwerp had played 0-0 as in Bulgaria. However, in the return game Antwerp was soon at a disadvantage. Twenty minutes from time was lost after injury also Franky Dekenne eleventh man. One minute before the end Antwerp was 1-3 behind. After the injury, however, was 6 minutes extra time given. Antwerp scored three times in those minutes, and qualified for the next round in extremis. In the following rounds off Antwerp recent UEFA Cup finalists Dundee United and VfB Stuttgart off to end in the quarterfinals against 1. To beaches. FC Köln Also in the national competition took one another European ticket. In 1991 the old Tawny Stadium thoroughly renovated, and were among more 800 business seats decorated. In 1992 Antwerp was successful in the Belgium Cup. KV Mechelen was defeated on penalties. Adjust the 22nd penalty brought the decision. 37 years after the first Cup win, and 35 years after the last title, Antwerp took another trophy inside. Thanks to Cup win Antwerp played in 1992/93 in the European Cup Winners' Cup. Antwerp was successful, and pushed through to the final. The final was played against the Italian AC Parma, in England's Wembley Stadium, but was admittedly lost 3-1. Antwerp ended in the league for a few years in the second tier, but could no European successes more books. In the league they ended in 1995 but even just above the relegation zone. In addition, there were problems with the stadium. For instance, in August 1995 the city of Antwerp a stand close a time because of the instability of the roof.
