INFO:
Firmani was a centre or inside forward. His career began in 1950 at Charlton Athletic. He transferred to Italy in 1955. He first played three seasons at Sampdoria, scoring 52 goals in 83 matches. Then he joined Inter, playing 100 games and scoring 65 times. Then he played for Genoa, Charlton Athletic, Southend United and again Charlton Athletic, retiring in 1968. During his time at Sampdoria, he naturalized Italian and capped 3 times for Italy, scoring twice.
Firmani was a prolific striker, who didn't dislike helping in defence (it's said that when he was playing for Charlton Athletic, some coaches wanted him as full back since he occasionally played in that position in the English team). Gifted with class and great sense of goal, he was very accurate and had an almost unfailing shot. He scored most of the times he got the ball and always managed to do something in every match but he rarely stood out. He was reactive in the box and accurate header, gifted with a nice leap. He could score with first time touches, including volleys, and his shots were considered thunderous. Due to his vivacity and incisive darting runs, he was compared to Guglielmo Gabetto. He was very dynamic and capable to free himself easily from his marker despite not being too fast. In fact, he needed most of the times a long ball that he reached after he unmarked himself. He wasn't stuck in the box or near it but he was more practical, often moving to the flank and passing the ball, especially with crosses. Therefore, he not only used to break through the defence with his movements but also had good vision of the game and could act as playmaker. While he was playing for Sampdoria, due to the injury of the goalkeeper, in a match against Triestina he had to play as goalkeeper and did quite well. A funny anecdote about Firmani regards the nicknames he was given to while he was in Italy: he was first called "Turkey" because he flapped his elbows when he ran, then "Cold Turkey" because he never celebrated when he scored, and eventually "Golden Turkey" when he began scoring with high consistency.
