INFO:
Sono is a former attacking midfielder or secondary striker. His career started in 1972 at Orlando Pirates where he played until 1976. He was named South African Sportsman of the Year in 1973. After leaving Orlando Pirates, he transferred to the United States, playing for New York Cosmos in 1977, Caribous of Colorado in 1978, Atlanta Chiefs in 1979, Toronto Blizzard from 1980 to 1982, scoring a total 36 goals in 128 apperances in the American league. At some point, he had successful trials with Sporting CP and Juventus, but he was unable to sign a contract due to work permits issues. He retired young in 1982 when he returned to South Africa and purchased the team Highlands Park, renaming it Jomo Cosmos.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest ever South African players, Sono quickly became a top player in his country since a young age. He was a talented midfield general who relied in his all-round ability, excellent and silky dribbling, and accurate passing skills. He combined a cocky style of play with a fiery and competitive termperament. He always displayed creativity, individual skill to get past defenders easily with his serpentines, and the ability to provide his teammates with defence-splitting passes. Nicknamed "Jomo" ─ word that means "burning spear" ─ he could control the game from midfield, either by playing deeper and distributing the ball or by challenging the opposition's defenders and running at them with the ball. He was remarkable in front of the goal too as he could unleash a curled shot or a blast a powerful one, either way making it unreachable for the goalkeeper. In addition, he was a set piece specialist, capable of scoring also from corner kick. He had all the tools to perform well in the world stage.
