Di Somma was a sweeper and centre back, legendary Avellino's captain during the Serie A seasons of the club. His career started in 1965 in Serie D at Juve Stabia. He transferred to Serie C club Lecce in 1968 and here he played 222 games in seven seasons. In 1975 he was sold to Pescara that was playing in Serie B. However he only played 42 matches in two season and he eventually joined Avellino. He gained the Serie A promotion in the first season and became team captain and one of the symbols for many years until his retirement in 1984 after having played 179 matches and scored 5 goals. Avellino's supporters remember him as a big but kind giant outside the field and a defensive bulwark in the pitch. Di Somma was a defender with a good sense of position and decent personality representing Avellino's defence due to his attitude and playstyle, in fact at Avellino he was part of one of the toughest defences to play against especially in home games; he always was the only defender in the last twenty metres between his own goalkeeper and the attackers, opposed to them using size and aggressiveness to prevail due to his lack of technique; he occasionally drove his team trying to go forward with the ball.
