His career began at Plymouth Argyle, where he scored 61 goals in 155 matches between 1973 and 1976. Then he joined Ipswich Town, where he had the best time of his career: 337 games and 136 goals from 1976 to 1984, won the 1977-78 FA Cup and the 1980-81 UEFA Cup. Meanwhile he gained several caps for England: 35 in total and 13 goals. After leaving Ipswich Town, he played for Arsenal, Portsmouth and clubs in Australia and United States. He retired in 1993. Mariner was a gutsy and prolific striker, accurate with both feet. Able in the air and an extraordinary header, his main task was to receive the balls from his teammates and score but he didn't dislike creating chances himself. In fact he often decided to move outside the box to get the ball − often using tackles − and then go to score or even pass the ball. In order to do that, he was skillful on the ground, possessing good technique, dribbling and speed. https://youtu.be/06ryvEGX1Gc?t=60 England 4-0 Norway: brilliant fourth goal https://youtu.be/wA0KCA6wpQg First goal at Ipswich Town: a powerful shot to the top corner https://youtu.be/i5K8FOuHTSY Hat-trick against Manchester United https://youtu.be/tydPFvA8vIs?t=100 Ipswich Town 3-1 Wolverhampton: header https://youtu.be/21CfSnQX-s0 Saint-Étienne 1-4 Ipswich Town: two goals |
