Richards was a centre forward who played almost his entire career in Wolverhampton Wanderers: 194 goals in 485 matches. He was the team top scorer until Steve Bull overtook the record. He played also for Derby County and Marítimo. He capped once for England in 1973.
Showing his potential already when he was very young, Richards was a striker with high sense of goal and accuracy with both feet. He wasn't too fast nor had outstanding technique but he was incredibly effective in front of the goal, especially with headings.
