Mubiru is a former right-winger who could also play as centre-forward. His career started in 1996 at Police FC Jinja. He was signed by giants SC Villa in 1997, playing there until 1999 and winning back-to-back league titles in his last two seasons at the club, scoring 23 goals in the 1999 edition. He had his best time at Express FC from 2000 to 2004 as he scored 105 league goals. Following the 2005 season spent in Rwanda at Armée Patriotique Rwandaise, he returned to Express FC for the 2006 season, scoring 11 league goals. Afterwards, he played for Silkeborg IF II in the Danish third tier league in 2006-07, once again Express FC between 2007 and 2010, and finally Victors FC from 2010 to 2012. He represented Uganda from 1998 to 2007, scoring 18 goals in 63 caps.
After displaying his brilliant skills on the right flank during his youth, Mubiru had the chance to play in the Ugandan top tier league with Police FC. He was nicknamed "Zidane during his SC Villa days, but despite that, his experience was mostly considered a flop except for his last season at the club. Many fans were confident that Mubiru would've flopped in his next club Express FC, believing that whenever he performed well with SC Villa, it was thanks to his teammates, especially Andrew Mukasa, Phillip Ssozi, Hakim Magumba and Edgar Watson. However, Mubiru surprised everyone by having several excellent years. During his Express FC days, he was nicknamed "Figo" and named Uganda Footballer of the Year in 1999 thanks to his dazzling skills and goals for both club and national team.
Mubiru's strongest qualities on the pitch were the abilities to take on defenders one-on-one and to leave goalkeepers disoriented and crawling on the ground. He could fool his markers with a lazy run only to catch them by surprise moments later with a sudden burst of speed. On the other hand, the Ugandan winger was also prone to miss easy chances that left spectactors and teammates baffled. His form, consistency, discipline and temper were also questionable at times.
A report that describes his abilities is from a 2001 match between Express FC and SC Villa: « a tightly marked Mubiru charges at SC Villa defence and receives a pass from the back; he doesn't slow down while disorienting the defenders by faking a shot and instead flicking the ball past tough fullback Patrick Musoke; Mubiru then moves towards the goal but is stopped by a rough tackle that earns his team a penalty. During this attack, the striker showed balance and timing. And this was his first action since coming on as substitute, highlighting his skills, nerves and hard work ».
