Bakambu is a centre-forward who can also play as winger. His career started in 2010 at Sochaux where he played 107 matches and scored 21 goals in four seasons, playing also for the reserve team several times. He transferred to Bursaspor in 2014 and scored 21 goals in 39 appearances during the 2014-15 season. He was then signed by Villarreal where he had a remarkable three-year stint as he scored 48 goals in 105 games. He had his last noteworthy experience in China at Beijing Guoan between 2018 and 2021 as he scored 58 goals in 87 appearances. Since then, he played for Olympique Marseille, Olympiacos, Galatasaray, and Real Betis where he's been playing since 2023. He represents DR Congo since 2015 and has scored 21 goals in 68 caps so far.
Bakambu is a strong centre-forward who can also play on the wing, position he covered especially during his time at Bursaspor. In his peak, he showed great pace both on and off the ball as well as notable dribbling. On the other hand, his ball control was sometimes flawed. His shooting technique was solid but Bakambu often challenged the goalkeeper one-on-one and preferred a softer, well-aimed shot, as he also took advantage of his excellent movements to beat the defensive line. However, he often missed easy opportunities from favourable positions. He was also decent in the air but not a very prolific header despite his good height. What made Bakambu an ever better player was his tendency to fall back throughout the whole match to receive the ball in midfield. He would occasionally fall further back to support his defenders. His movements outside the box and attempts at starting an attack with a through pass made him a selfishless striker.
