INFO:
Kalala was a centre-forward. His career started in 1958 at US Panda. He left in 1962 for TP Englebert (now known as Mazembe) where he played for the rest of his career from 1962 to 1974, winning the African Champions League in 1967 and 1968. Other sources claim that he played in Belgium for FC Seraing from 1972 to 1974. Kalala represented the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1963 to 1970, scoring at least 6 goals (one from penalty) and winning the 1968 Africa Cup of Nations. He reportedly scored over 500 goals for both clubs and national team, for which he was selected around 90 times, including official and unofficial games.
Considered one of the most important strikers in DR Congo's history and one of the best in Africa during the 1960s, Kalala was nicknamed Le Bombardier for his very powerful shots. It's with one of them that he led DR Congo to winning the 1968 African Cup when he scored the decisive goal in the final against Ghana: he used his chest to control a long cross before hitting the ball with a powerful dropping shot. Other than his lightning shots, he could rely on an impressive physique as he was 184 or 185 cm tall and weighed over 90 kg ─ allegedly 103 kg. And due to his natural leadership qualities, he was named team captain and player-coach of Englebert in 1964.
Kalala was DR Congo's goal-scoring machine throughout the 1960s. He scored 1 goal from penalty in the second leg of the 1967 African Champions League final against Asante Kotoko, and 2 in the first leg of the 1968 final against Étoile Filante du Togo. He also scored 1 goal in the first leg of the 1970 final which was, though, lost to Asante Kotoko (Englebert were runners-up the prior year too). The Congolese striker was the competition's top scorer in 1967, 1968 and 1970 with 2, 7 and 4 goals, respectively.
