Mukombo was a left-back. He spent his entire career at Mazembe from the 1960s to 1976, winning the African Champions League three times in a row between 1968 and 1970. He also won the Africa Cup of Nations twice with Zaire in 1968 and 1974, and participated at the 1974 FIFA World Cup. He represented his country at least 31 times.
Mukombo was a short but physically solid defender who could challenge bigger strikers as he showed against Scotland's Peter Lorimer at the World Cup, but surprisingly suffered against skilled wingers. He wasn't very fast and lacked notable technical skills on the ball, but was way faster off the ball. His teamwork was solid as he could provide decent and fast crosses at the end of his numerous offensive raids. On the other hand, he showed some awful long balls from the back at the World Cup.
