INFO:
Kirunda was a sweeper, centre-back and centre-forward. His career started in 1965 at Mulago FC. He then joined for Express FC and eventually KCCA in 1969. It's with KCCA that he had the most success, winning the Ugandan league twice, the second time in 1978 as league top-scorer given that he was used as centre-forward even though he was still a defender for Uganda. His performance earned him the chance to play for Emirati team Abu Dhabi SC in 1979. He later played for SC Villa, against in Uganda, where he retired in the 1980s. He represented Uganda throughout the 1970s, playing the Africa Cup of Nations in 1974, 1976 and 1978, leading his country to the 1978 final as captain, role he filled for ten years. He's still Uganda's longest serving captain.
Nicknamed "Kaiser" for the comparison to German legend Franz Beckenbauer due to the similar style of play, Kirunda is considered Uganda's greatest ever defender and one of country's most important players. Kirunda was tall, physically strong, gifted with great defensive prowess, vision, leadership, dominance, flair, an elegant style, and he hardly put a foot wrong. But beside his superb abilities in defence, he was equally good in the attack thanks to his frequent deep runs to break forward in search of a goal. His towering frame, the ability to create scoring chances, his efficiency in the air, and powerful shots, made him a perfect striker, hence why he was used mainly as a centre-forward by KCCA during the 1978 league season where he scored 32 (or 38) goals, setting a record that was broken in 1999. Regarding his shooting ability, Kirunda is also remembered for an match in 1975 where he shot so hard that the ball hit the crossbar and ended in the stands, hitting and allegedly killing an Express FC supporter. Kirunda could also take free kicks, especially from favourable positions, alternating with the specialist Eddie Ssemwanga, but Uganda's captain usually preferred to wait for the ball in the box and head it in.
Even though Kirunda was Uganda's captain, he was never KCCA's main captain, but he didn't need to be. He was the team's leader anyway. Whenever a teammate underperformed, he head to deal with Kirunda. And if someone wanted to play for KCCA, the player had to impress Kirunda and not the team scouts. Even a temperamental forward like Godfrey Kateregga, who had the knack of talking back to anyone, would think twice before attempting to argue with Kirunda.
