Kanu is a former centre-forward who could also play as secondary striker. His career started in 1992 at Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now called Heartland FC). One year later, he signed for Ajax, where he spent three seasons, scoring 27 goals in 74 matches. Following a bad experience in Italy at Inter between 1996 and 1999, he had his most successful time at Arsenal, where he played between 1999 and 2004, scoring 44 goals in 198 games. He retired in 2012 after two years with West Bromwich Albion and a good six-year spell at Portsmouth. He represented Nigeria 86 times between 1994 and 2011, scoring 12 goals.
Kanu was a tall, physically strong centre-forward, and for this reason he looked like the typical in-box striker who waits for the ball close to the goal. Instead, he moved a lot outside the opposition's area, being particularly efficient in setting up his teammates with excellent passes more than he was in shooting. Understandably, he lacked solid agility and pace, although he was deceptively fast over a longer distance. However, he possessed outstanding dribbling and technique, especially considering his body size. His shot technique was very good but the same can't be said about the accuracy and power. Several times, he scored after coming in as a substitute, proving that he could be a key player as a fresh player when the opposing team was tired.
