He spent the majority of his career at Shooting Stars where he played from 1975 to 1984 and 1989 to 1991. He also played for Stationety Stores in 1984-85, and Abiola Babes in 1987-88. He capped for Nigeria 86 times between 1975 and 1985, scoring 11 goals and winning the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations. He tragically died prematurely in 1991 following a collapse during training. Considered one of Nigeria's greatest ever midfielders, Lawal had his biggest asset in his dominance in midfield, which he controlled with authority and vision, as he was the reference point for both club and national team. He brought class to the midfield with his great ball control and accurate passing skills, but he was also an able dribbler, marker and scorer. He could hold the opposition's attacks with efficiency by tirelessly running and fighting for the ball. He was calm, quite fast on the ball, solid in the air, could read the game, always knew what to do, and led by example, carrying his team during the whole match with first class leadership qualities. Lawal was the engine room as his outstanding stamina, versatility, constant movements made him an automatic choice for all the coaches who had the luck to have him in their team. He was so versatile that he even played as centre-forward in one match in 1980. That was due to the fact that even though he mostly played in front of his back-line, he would often join the attack, set up the offense from a side or make a late run to the box and attempt to score.
