He started his professional career in 1985 in Germany, playing for SC Freiburg for three seasons, scoring 58 goals in 113 matches. He then spent two years at Nürnberg, making 62 appearances and 15 goals. He had his best time at Wattenscheid 09 where he played from 1990 to 1994 and 1997 to 1999, for a total 171 games and 51 goals. He also played for Tirol Innsbruck in 1994-95, Lausanne-Sport between 1995 and 1997, LASK in 1999, and Schaffhausen in 2000. He retired in 2010 after spending a decade in the German lower leagues. He capped for Senegal 23 times and scored 11 goals, although some sources report a higher number of caps and goals. Sané was a very good striker, gifted with excellent pace, especially over shorter distances, and fast dribbling that allowed to get past multiple defenders in a single run. On the other hand, his close ball control wasn't always optimal. Whilst Sané wasn't too accurate in his shots, often missing easy chances, he was essential in the attack thanks to his reaction inside and outside the box, reaching loose balls before the defenders and taking advantage of every mistake made by his opponents. He was seemingly left-footed but was comfortable with both feet and often used the right. He was also good in the air thanks to a remarkable jump and an accurate heading. In addition, he didn't mind falling back into midfield or even into his own half to fight for the ball and recover it, despite not being notably strong, before starting a personal attack or setting up a teammate with a pass. He was usually unselfish as he provided a good amount of assists, but sometimes preferred attempting the shot from awkward positions when the situation required a different solution. Spoiler: show |
