He joined the Ugandan Army in 1969 and started playing for the army team Simba FC one year later. He retired in 1979. An Uganda international, he capped several times during the 1970s, taking part to the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations. His early retirement was due to his problems of condition as he was a heavy drinker. His habits were the reason why he was pulled out of the national team 1976 African Cup squad after being initially selected. Regarded as one of Uganda's greatest defenders, Doka was nicknamed "Rock" and "Berlin Wall" for his tall and strong physique as well as his superb defensive technique. Considered the de facto leader on the pitch, he was classy and always praised for his talent. He possessed good timing of tackles and game reading ability. He was also excellent in the air, a nightmare for the opposition's defenders whenever he joined the attack. He formed a great partnership with Jimmy Kirunda and side-backs Eddie Semwanga and Ashe Mukasa. In addition, Doka was good at supporting the attack as he pushed forward, made penetrative runs and provided deft passes. In the process of Simba FC winning the Ugandan league in 1971 and reaching the African Cup of Champions final in 1972, Doka was crucial in helping the team to concede as few goals as possible. And he also played a key role in the 1974 Africa Cup qualifiers as well as in the 3-0 win over Zambia to qualify Uganda for the 1976 edition as he made a great run from his own half to set Phillip Omondi's decisive goal. |
