INFO:Mariani is a former defensive or central midfielder and wing-back. His career started in 1980 at Pisa where he had his best time, playing with the
Nerazzurri for seven seasons, making 150 appearances and scoring 10 goals. He then played for Avellino, Sambenedettese, Arezzo, Siena, Carrarese, Viareggio and Benevento. He retired in 1994.
A key player in Pisa's midfield during the club's 1980s golden era, Mariani was as good in attack as he was in defense. He had the task to mark legends like Diego Maradona and Michel Platini. But his game wasn't only about stopping the opposing playmaker. He was a midfielder gifted with good football basics, solid dribbling, accurate heading, a fine shot and reliable tactical awareness. His abilities allowed him to be a threat in the numerous occasions where he joined the attack. Among his most memorable moments are a bicycle kick against Roma that was deflected by a teammate who scored, and a fantastic goal against Catanzaro with a left-footed ground shot after dribbling a few opponents.
