INFO:
Motaung was a right-back who also played as wing-back or centre-back and occasionally left-back. His career started in 1991 at Jomo Cosmos. He transferred to Mamelodi Sundown in 1994. His legendary performance at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations convinced Swiss team St. Gallen to sign him for the 1996-97 season. He joined Spanish team Tenerife one year later. He eventually played for Kaizer Chiefs from 1998 to 2000 and Orlando Pirates in 2000-01. He tragically died of an AIDS-related illness on 16 August 2001. He capped for South Africa 49 times between 1992 and 1997, winning the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
An exciting right-back, possibly the best South Africa has ever produced, Motaung was solid in the defense and often dangerous in the attack. He covered his side close to his area quite well and sometimes showed decent tackling. He possessed solid technique and good speed off the ball but less on the ball. However, his dribbling was excellent and usually accurate. It allowed him to be a threat for the opposing defenders as he would often get close to the touch-line to deliver a cross to the box. And if he had hard times dribbling the defenders, he could challenge them with his physique. Motaung's ball distribution was remarkable. His crosses especially were accurate, often fast and usually with nice curling. South Africa coach Clive Barker often put him in charge of corner kicks. Motaung could also start the attack with long pinpoint passes, but he preferred to join the forwards himself, showing his offensive prowess. While he wasn't a scorer, he had a powerful shot that he showed, for example, against Cameroon at the 1996 AFCON, competition where he was one of the most important players of his team.
