Nere is a former central or defensive midfielder. He spent his entire career at Persipura Jayapura, playing for this team in the 1970s and 1980s. He represented Indonesia from 1979 to 1989, earning 38 caps.
Compared to French legend Jean Tigana, Nere is considered one of the best playmakers in Indonesia's football history thanks to his sharp vision and elegant touch of the ball. A formidable centre-back in his early years, he was turned into a midfielder in the late 1970s. In the new role, Nere became a midfield maestro known for his clever game reading ability. His playing style was captivating as he conducted the game, controlled the rhythm with intelligence, was capable of sending defence-splitting passes through gaps that other players couldn't see. Thanks to his previous experience as a defender, Nere also had a deep understanding of the defense and knew when to attack or when it was necessary to slow down.
