INFO:
Hussein is a former defensive midfielder who was originally a forward. His career started in 1970 at Al-Tahrir. He transferred to Egypt in 1973, playing for Al-Ahly until his retirement in 1983. He reached his peak in 1982 when he helped the Egyptian team to win their first CAF Champions League. He capped many times for Sudan and was years later named among the 50 best Sudanese players of all time.
One of the best midfielders Sudan has ever produced, Hussein was signed by Al-Ahly as a striker even though coach NĂ¡ndor Hidegkuti wasn't satisfied with the player's short and weak physique. Nonetheless, he impressed for his technical abilities and the good scoring rate he had in Sudan. However, he was moved to the defensive midfielder position. In the new position, he showed tremendous ball control, great speed, very strong tackling, the ability to start the attack quickly with long passes. He was persistent in controlling the opponent assigned to him as he didn't give him opportunities to move freely in the central zone of the field. He was even more effective against Al-Ahly biggest rival team Zamalek, especially when he had to mark Farouk Gaafar. Al-Ahly's fans remember him also for his gymnast-like jump during a celebration after a goal in the 1977-78 Egypt Cup final won 4-2 against Zamalek.
