Regarded as one of the best ever Maltese players and arguably the best ever, Busuttil was an offensive midfielder or secondary striker. His career began in 1979 at Rabat Ajax, in Malta, where he played for four seasons, scoring 47 goals in 113 matches. After a short spell in Italian lower leagues, playing 20 games and scoring 8 goals for Verbania, he transferred to Belgian club Genk, where he probably had the best time of his career. In Belgium he scored 45 goals in 166 matches in six seasons. In 1994 he came back to Malta, this time playing for Sliema Wanderers. He played 153 matches and scored 66 goals in eight seasons before retiring in 2002. He's Malta's most capped player with 113 appearances and the second ever top scorer, with 23 goals, right behind Michael Mifsud.
Busuttil was gifted with great technique and dribbling ability, fantastic speed and a very good sense of goal. He was good with both feet but he was also a very good header with good elevation. He was able with first time touches, either when shooting or delivering short passes. His shots had a good power that could make them dangerous from the distance despite the fact that the shots from outside the area probably weren't Busuttil's specialty. Even though he liked to challenge the opponents with dribblings, he was un unselfish player who often passed the ball and tracked back to help the defence, sometimes even near his team's goal, trying to intercept and covering.
