Richard Witschge was a midfielder who could play on the left side or in the center. Gifted with good speed and unselfishness, he was renowned for his very technique and passes. He grew up at Ajax becoming a member of Netherlands national team already in his early years, capping 11 times only in 1990. He played 94 matches for Ajax from 1986 to 1991, scoring 3 goals. He then transferred to Barcelona where he was a regular starter in the first season and winning the UEFA European Cup. He found less space in the second season and after a total of 55 games and 2 goals, he transferred to Bordeaux in 1993. He played 106 matches and scored 12 goals for the French team. In the middle he played a match for Blackburn Rovers where he was loaned in 1994-95. He returned to Ajax in 1996, playing five more seasons, appearing 143 times and scoring 13 goals. After a season at Alavés he played one last year for Ajax, then he played for ADO '20 and Japanese team Oita Trinita before retiring in 2004. He capped 31 times for Netherlands, scoring once.
