Warhurst was a player who could cover the most of field zones. His main position was central midfielder but he could also play as centre back, centre forward and occasionally side midfielder and side back. His career began in 1988 at Oldham Athletic where he played for three seasons. He then played for two seasons at Sheffield Wednesday where he appeared 37 times in the first season and 47 in the second, scoring also 18 goals because he mostly played as centre forward. After four more games he transferred to Blackburn Rovers in 1993, winning the 1994-95 Premier League and playing a total 73 matches, scoring 4 times. He had some injuries in these seasons so he was sold to Crystal Palace in 1997. He also played for Bolton Wanderers, Stoke City, Blackpool and several other minor clubs before retiring in 2008. Warhurst was a good player who participated in both defence and attack. Mainly right-footed but good with both feet, he was a very good short passer, decent with the head, gifted with discreet technique who made him able to go with the ball forward when playing as centre back, not very fast though and he didn't have a very accurate shot despite having scored 18 goals in one single season.
