Richard Witschge is a former left side or central midfielder during his early years at Ajax, then also defensive midfielder and defender in all positions. He had two spells at Ajax, the first between 1986 and 1991, the second from 1996 to 2003, playing 285 matches and scoring 18 goals. His experience at Barcelona between 1991 and 1993 was less successful, while the three season at Bordeaux from 1993 to 1996 were better. He played also for Blackburn Rovers, Alavés and Oita Trinita. He gained 31 caps for Netherlands, scoring once.
An unselfish player, Witschge was renowned for his technique and passing ability. He was more effective in attack than in defence. He possessed decent speed and very good dribbling. He wasn't a good shooter in his early career but he improved this characteristic, becoming also a decent free kick taker. His persistent physical problems and lack of consistency stopped him from possibly having an even better career.
