Friedel is a former goalkeeper. His career began in 1995. After experiences in several clubs including Galatasaray and Liverpool, he joined Blackburn Rovers in 2000, immediately becoming the first choice goalkeeper. He made 358 appearances for Blackburn Rovers 358 in eight seasons, even scoring a goal. He then played 131 matches for Aston Villa from 2008 to 2011. He retired in 2014 after three seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, playing 67 games. He gained 82 caps for the United States.
Arguably the best ever goalkeeper in the history of the United States and one of the most consistent in the world during the 2000s, Friedel was mostly renowned for his incredible reflexes. He also had great condition and rarely missed a match during his time at Blackburn Rovers. He was tall, strong and commanded the defence with authority and respect. Thanks to his height, he could easily catch high balls without needing to jump much. He was very effective between the posts thanks to his reaction but he was also highly effective against long range shots. Able in 1-on-1 situations, he often came out of the goal and sometimes even the area. However, he didn't possess a very good sense of position and had troubles against shots from short distances when the area was crowded because he could leave some empty spaces, resulting in the opponent scoring easily.
