INFO:Mário de Castro was a centre-forward who could also play as inside forward. He played exclusively for Atlético Mineiro from 1926 to 1931 before deciding to retire at only 26 years old due to a shocking accident: after a match won 4-3 against Villa Nova − Mário scored all goals for Atlético Mineiro, flipping the initial 3-0 disadvantage − one of Atlético Mineiro directors shot to death a Villa Nova supporter. Due to his height, Mário first wanted to play basketball but then opted for football. He was called-up for Brazil at some point but refused to be Carvalho Leite's reserve. Mário was Atlético Mineiro's top scorer until 1974, when Dadá Maravilha surpassed him. He won the Campeonato Mineiro three times, twice as top scorer of the tournament. He was part of the
Trio maldito with Jairo de Assis Almeida and Said Paulo Arges.
A tall striker, Mário possessed determination and a powerful shot but the main quality was his great dribbling, thanks to which he overcame the opposing defenders. He could shoot accurately with both feet, showing great sense for placing the ball in the right spot. While it was said that he could give the ball an impressive effect, his shots were usually powerful and direct. It was also said that he never sent the ball outside of the goal but it either went inside or was saved by the goalkeeper. In fact, he was incredibly prolific as he scored 195 goals in 100 games. He once said that he doesn't remember a single match where he didn't make at least one goal. Apparently, he used to walk in the first half of the match to study the opponents and then he turned the game in the second half. Furthermore, he was an intelligent player who had great connection with his teammates.
