Appiah is a former central midfielder who could also play as defensive or side midfielder. His career started in 1995 at Hearts of Oak in his native country Ghana. He transferred to Italy in 1997 and played for Udinese, Parma, Brescia, and Juventus before joining Turkish team Fenerbahçe in 2005. He spent three seasons in Turkey, although he was hardly used in 2007-08 and then he missed the entire 2008-09 season due to physical problems. He retired in 2012 following unsuccessful spells with Bologna, Cesena, and Vojvodina. He represented Ghana 67 times, scoring 15 goals and taking part to the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Appiah was a solid midfielder who contributed in both attack and defence. He wasn't always the cleanest of tacklers but he knew how to recover the ball in front of his own back-line before setting an attack for his team. He was gifted with remarkable technical qualities, especially in his dribbling. His passing skills were good overall, but he sometimes misjudged the situation as he would send the ball into areas of the pitch where a teammate was obviously marked or couldn't reach the ball. He wasn't very fast, though he was agile and could get around an opponent easily. On the other hand, he often showed a lack of balance on the ball. He liked to join the attack and attempted a shot whenever he had the chance. His shots weren't very accurate but he could be a threat with his fairly powerful kicks when he aimed the goal well. His shot technique was even more noteworthy as he could hit the ball first time, even in acrobacy.
