INFO:
Eguavoen is a former centre-back and right-back. His career started in 1985 at ACB FC in Lagos, Nigeria. One year later, he transferred to Belgium where he spent the majority of his career between, playing for KAA Gent from 1986 to 1990, Kotrijk between 1990 to 1994 and in 1995-96. He also played for Deportivo Ourense in Spain, Sacramento Scorpions in the United States, Torpesco Moscow in 1997-98, and Sliema Wanderers in Malta between 1999 and 2001. He represented Nigeria 49 times between 1987 and 1998, scoring once and winning the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations.
A very tall and strong defender, Eguavoen understandably lacked pace and technical abilities, even though they weren't bad either. He possessed remarkable marking ability and sense of position. On the other hand, he wasn't particularly aggressive from a defensive perspective and not always accurate in his tackles. His ball distribution was decent, especially in his short passes. He was excellent in the air thanks to accurate heading and notable jump that added to his height. He would attempt to join the attack on occasions, especially when playing as side-back. In this role, he was even seen in a rare run to the opposition's box, followed by a dribbling and a blocked cross in the 1994 World Cup quarter-final against Italy. He also made some mistakes during the extra time of the game though, one of them being crucial when he committed a clumsy fault in his own area that earned Italy the match-winning penalty. Lastly, Eguavoen was often in charge of throw-ins.
