Ballarini was a right-back and libero. He started his career as inside-forward at Rovereto in 1956. Two years later, he signed for Como where he spent nearly the rest of his career, making 359 appearances and scoring 8 goals from 1958 to 1970. He retired in 1972 after playing briefly for Chiasso.
One of Como's most iconic players and the team's captain from 1961 to 1970, Ballarini had a muscular physique and a great attitude that made him the perfect bulwark in the middle of the defense. Powerful and tenacious, he though suffered problems of condition from time to time and wasn't very effecitive in the air or one-on-one when he faced skilled dribblers. He was a solid tackler and fine man marker. His carefulness in reading the trajectory of shots and crosses allowed him to save many balls on the line. He wasn't notably skilled on the ball but possessed the technique to sweep the ball in defense and shoot when attacking. In fact, it wasn't uncommon for him to push forth in support of the forward line, especially when the strikers weren't playing well. Once he got close to the opposition's area, he would deliver a good cross or attempt a powerful shot.
