Bailey was a right half-back, who could play also as centre back. He played 151 league matches and scored 20 goals for Charlton Athletic from 1958 to 1966. In this period he had the chance to cap twice for England. He left for Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he had the best time of his career from 1966 to 1977: 436 matches, 25 goals, a Football League Cup win and a UEFA Cup final. For some reason he was never called up for England again after those 2 only caps. He retired in 1979 after short spells at Minnesota Kicks and Hereford United.
Bailey was a strong and neat midfielder, an uncompromising tackler, who recovered several balls, but also a creative passer. He was considered the natural successor of legends like Stan Cullis, Billy Wright and Bill Slater. Gifted with a dynamic shot, he occasionally was also scorer of spectacular goals. Moreover, he could deliver long and efficient throw-ins, which were dangerous when sent in the box. He was the captain and leader, the driving force behind the forward line match by match and his absence was felt in the latter stages of the 1971-72 UEFA Cup, when Wolverhampton lost the final to Tottenham Hotspur, or in the 1972-73 FA Cup semi-final, lost against Leeds United.
