INFO: José Maria de Carvalho Sales, an icon of Northeastern Brazilian football who played as a right-back and midfielder, with stints at Náutico (Sport's rival) and other teams, stood out in the Brazilian scene between the 1950s and 1960s, participating in the 1959 Copa América.

Main Playing Characteristics:
Versatility: He played both as a right-back and in midfield.
Technique and Grit: He was known for combining technical skill with a tenacious and dedicated style.
History: He had a remarkable career in Pernambuco football, playing for Náutico.

Spoiler: show
The call-up to the Cacareco tournament was entirely justified. Zé Maria was a classic defensive midfielder, extremely skillful. He wasn't a starter at the beginning of the South American Championship, but he joined the team during the competition – his inclusion was requested by the press and the president of the Pernambuco Football Federation (FPF), Rubem Moreira. “He liked me a lot,” recalls the Sport midfielder, who now enjoys his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at his beachfront home in Janga.

Pretty sure he was born in 1931 and not 1939. He played for Sport from 1952-1960 which makes a lot more sense as a 21-29 year old and not a 13-21 year old.

I also couldn't agree with the birth year; the forum says he was a very good player despite being very young, but I don't believe that's the case. However, I eventually found out that he was indeed born in 1931. Thank you, updated
