UEFA Jubilee Awards - "Golden Players"

Image

To celebrate the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA)'s 50th anniversary in 2004, each of its member associations was asked by UEFA to choose one of its own players as the single most outstanding player of the past 50 years (1954–2003). The 52 players were known as the Golden Players. The list of players was released in November 2003, and were recognized at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon.

Am I the only one who has to laugh when he sees that list? Some nominations are sooo wrong, for example Prohaska at Austria (instead of Sindelar, Ocwirk, Hiden, Binder, etc) or Davor Suker for Croatia (instead of Vukas, Bobek, Zebec, Beara, Cajkovski, etc). But as I'm German it's most laughable that the DFB has chosen Fritz Walter. As much as I respect Fritz Walter (great captain of the 1954 WC squad) but IMO there is only one player who really is the greatest German footballer of all time: it's Franz Beckenbauer and not Fritz Walter..

Why no Sindelar is easy to explain. It is about the best player of the last 50 years. But I do agree that some choices are weird yeah

Yes, it's just the players from last 50 years..

Well Šuker is there because like everywhere else when making the selections of the best players, just the players from the last 20-30 years are mentioned..

Older players, as well as the words of people who watched them playing, get redicouled and laughed. Just the thoughts of new internet fanboys generation count...

Sad but true...

Well said. Btw, regarding France it's also a surprise for me that they chose Just Fontaine. I wouldn't say that I'm one of the internet fanboys but I would have chosen Zinedine Zidane or Michel Platini instead of Fontaine ;)

I believe we had a set for Poom on the old forum.
For Narbekovas there's one match available on footballia:

Probably Dimonspa knows this guy and could help there ;)
For Lubansky there are more games available:

This guy was excellent player, too bad he injured in that game against England, after that injury he never reached his old class again (despite returning to NT & playing in the WC in 1978)..
